Certification

FSSC is often a good fit for companies that want more flexibility, as it is a risk-based food safety management system. With the ISO 22000 framework, FSSC 22000 allows the integration of your food safety management system with other risk- based management systems such as Quality, Environment or Health and Safety.

FSSC audits are also good for companies who want to review their written programs first to see if they are ready for full audit because they are divided into two separate audit phases: documentation and facility. Companies can make corrections between the two audit phases, without impacting their final score, which can save money in the long run.

AIBI-CS maintains accreditation based on scheme owner’s requirements.

FSSC 22000 contains a complete certification scheme for food safety systems based on existing ISO standards:

  • Food safety management standard ISO 22000: 2005 “Requirements for any organization in the food chain”
  • Prerequisite programs for packaging manufacturing: ISO/TS 22002-4

Packaging manufacturers that are already certified against ISO 22000:2018 will need only an additional review against ISO/TS 22002-4 and additional FSSC 22000 requirements for certification.

Partially Virtual Audits

The FSSC Foundation now allows the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools to complete the FSSC 22000 audits. The ICT audit approach consists of a two-step process: a remote audit that focuses on document review and interviews with key personnel, followed 30 to 90 days later by a one-day on-site audit that consists of a physical inspection. You will receive the final report when both the remote and on-site audits have been completed.

To learn more, read Annex 9.

The requirements as set out in IAF MD4 on the use of ICT for auditing/assessment purposes are mandatory. It is important to note that this is an alternate but voluntary option.
